V-Day and Hollywood ...
Well Valentine Day is around ... and I'm thinking Hollywood ...
What happened to the fail-proof-success-formula the on celluloid …
“boy-meets-girl-meets-opposition-meets-success in the end" !!!???
We seem to have outgrown the classic “fairy tale” romances ...
Now we have
- Adam meets Adam [Brokeback Mountains]
- Beauty Meets Beast [King Kong]
- Geisha meets a rich patron [Memoirs of Geisha]...
Does any of these modern romances have a “lived happily ever after” finale????
NONE what so ever!!!
Art-imitates-life ... which ... imitates-art ...
Reality-n-Art feeds and grows upon each other. So as our society is evolving & metamorphosizing and people are becoming more accepting towards a-typical relationships ... Our Hollywood is responding by incorporating the changing social dynamics into movie-themes ... and in the process; shaping-up the public perception by weilding it's huge impact ... Thus this Hollywood-Society interaction is reinforcing the symbiotic relation between Art & Reality ...
But what I find really intriguing is that the cliched “All’s well that Ends Well” coda; has now become a staple subject-matter for romantic-"COMEDY" (??!!!) Genre ...
- Cheaper by Dozen
- The Wedding Crashers
- Mr. & Mrs. Smith ...
It’s accepted that most epic love stories have tragic ending ... Titanic, Casablanca, Romeo & Juliet ... to name a just a few ... Our dear old St. Valentine himself was executed on the 14th of Feb. signing his most celebrated farewell letter as ... "From Your Valentine” ...
And since V-Day is round the corner ... its time to honor his sacrifices ... So I'll end this post with names of few evergreen romantic movies ... Roman Holiday, An Affair to Remember, Pride and Prejudice, Sleepless in Seattle, Notting Hill, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones Diary, One Fine Day, French Kiss ...
But let it be a day of ... red-roses, chocolates & bubbly champagne ...
& Well movies can wait ...

But Mr&Mrs Smith is a happy ending, nonetheless :D
V-day is still some time away. For now, tomorrow is Super Bowl and though I am not into football, I have to since the Seattle Seahawks are in and it will be a lot more festive in town tomorrow!
Did you read you got tagged?!
Ohh Yes!
The superbowl today ...
I watch more for the ads.
This time a 30-seconds advertisment costs two-n-half millions. Then of course Mick Jagger will perform!
Mr. and Mrs. Smith is good. Despire all the fighting they succeed to resolving all their problems!! :D
Sanity -
Yes Mr.& Mrs Smith is an okay romantic-action-thriller ... with ahappy ending ...
Ramani- >
Yups.... the movie is the beginning of an off-screen story ...
In light of the approaching Valentine Day;
this post is essentially my personal comic /staritic views on "romantic-theme" in Hollywood-movies these days....
Take movies of 2005 ...
# The movies that I liked the most dont have a romantic-theme at all ... Munich, Capote, GoodNight-&-GoodLuck
# Some good romantic-movies had very off-beat /a-typical love-stories:
- Beauty & Beast [King Kong]
- Guy meets guy [Brokeback Mountain]
- Geisha meets aristrocrat [Memoirs of Geisha]....
BUT But... none of these have happy ending ....
So what happened to classic fairy-tale like romances where, girl-meets-boy-meets-opposition-BUT love-concurs-all stories ????
Now we see them in "COMEDY- movies"...like :
- Cheaper by Dozen
- Wedding crashers
- Mr. & Mrs Smith
Now all these movies were 2005- releases ...
To me this trend is strangely funny, but very close to reality...
AND so I wrote up this post!
But, then I just named a few all-time famous romantic-tragedies and then some movies with happy-ending!!!
That's a very insightful commentary on Hollywood trend! Very interesting.
I had a look at the adds. I think they were very over rated. There were only one or two that were memorable:
The Dove Add - I liked it. But, my cynical side is saying- Is Dove's crusade for self-esteem for Women similar to Tobacco companies sponsoring cancer detection programs?
The Escalade Add- Classy and very nicely done. Suits the profile of the product very well I would think!
The Bud adds were cheesy for most of it. Except for 1 which I liked - the one about searching for the lost Buds.
Otherwise, Valentine's Day. Another 'pressure' day. You are supposed to be happy during Christmas and New Years Eve. You are supposed to have a romantic 'other' to spend Valentine's day with....
I have seen Roman Holiday..its a wonderful movie..clean green and wonderfully made..It was one of my Grandfather's favorites..he basically egged me to watch it..
He used to keep talking about An Affair to Remember as well..
Though I haven't seen it..
Ramani ->
Your Granddad does have a good taste. Well "An Affair to Remember" and "Sleepless in Seattle" both have NY's Empire State Building ... and my crazy mind is wondering if there's something about that building and Hollywood romantic stories as even King-Kong has the very same building!
Coming to Superbowl ads. ...
I think last year they were better! But yeah I liked the Cadillac Escalada ad.
About anti-smoking ads. if I'm not mistaken, all major smoking companies agreed to create a national education campaign to show to ill-effects of tobacco ...
[I'm not sure though]
I think until recently it was the worlds tallest buildings. In a world where there were not too many tall buildings. Where every city didn't have it's share of skyscrapers. It would have been like the Eiffel Tower or the Pyramids of Egypt.
Hmm..I didn't see the last years one. The Escalade add was great. Loved it!
Heh..yeah..I have a bad feeling Dove must have come under attack for ugly duckling to beauty steorotypes. Hence, this other more 'ethical' approach.
The Dove ad. is that real women are not the skinny, frail types and should be comfortable in their skins. Though I like the idea, I dont want to see them with their cloths off - not a pretty site!
probably they should work on the theme but change the presentation!
Me thinks so ....
Oh that I add. I remember that. Slightly disgusting.
I was refering to the other one, with all the young girls who have complexes. I found it in very good taste.
hmmmm ... I think I havent seen it yet!
Will keep on mind ...
Thats the one I got off Google video.
